The events of 9/11 were a pivotal moment for the Uyghurs living in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in NW China. From this point on, China used the global narrative of combating terrorism as the basic premise for a sustained and aggressive attack on Uyghur populations, with a systemic and brutal campaign disassembling Uyghur communities and cultural sites in what has been described as a genocide. Dr. Sean Roberts’ new book examines China’s Uyghur policies and provides a geopolitical analysis of the Global War on Terror and China’s translation of Islamic counterterrorism into a campaign against the Uyghur Muslims.
